When it comes to growing in your knowledge of God as a believer, I completely agree with these words from my pastor, “You cannot know God any more than you know His Word, and you cannot love God any more than you love His Word.”

As beautiful as having the desire to know and love God’s Word, you also need the right tools and resources to help you understand the Bible which is why I’m excited to share ‘Sturdy’ with you. Idy did a beautiful job as the author of this guide to simplify seemingly complex techniques to equip any believer, new or experienced, to effectively study the Bible and fall in love with God’s Word while at it.

In “Sturdy: The Simple Guide to Effective Bible Study,” Idy Archibong presents a roadmap for properly studying and understanding the Bible.

I think the progression of this book is quite brilliant. She starts by showing how the Bible, although split into several different chapters and narratives, is just one single story from start to finish. She emphasises the interconnectedness of Scripture, simplifies exegetical techniques and guides readers through the historical context of the Bible to get started with understanding the Bible better.

Next, she presents a roadmap, initially guiding readers on how to construct a Bible study structure. This is followed by an introduction to the tools needed for Bible study, an explanation of literary devices in the Bible, and techniques for interpretation. Finally, she concludes with tips on how to maintain consistency and provides additional guidance on Bible study.

Sturdy is available as an e-book or physical book

The strength of ‘Sturdy’ lies in its holistic approach. I like that the guide is detailed, well-written, and easily digestible. Idy was very intentional using examples to clearly explain many of the points made in the book. This is something I liked about the guide. You’re not only taught how to interpret and study the Bible, but you also get to apply what you learn and see how it works.

Additionally, through reflection questions, journal prompts, and practical exercises, as you read the guide, you are encouraged to engage with it in a deeply personal way, allowing it to shape your actions as well as your beliefs. There’s something to immediately apply to improve your bible study culture.

In conclusion, Sturdy is a great book for anyone who has ever struggled with keeping at Bible Study or wants to deepen their understanding of the Bible. With its engaging writing style, and emphasis on devotional transformation, this book offers a compelling invitation to explore the richness of Scripture profoundly.

As with any resource to improve your devotional life as a believer, I encourage you to test what you learn against the Scriptures. This is a good practice to imbibe while using religious resources and it’s a good way to practice what you learn from Sturdy.
